Job Description: Printhead Mfg Reliability and Failure Analysis Engineer

The beautiful, park-like Xerox campus in Wilsonville, Oregon is looking for a senior reliability and printhead test engineer.

This position involves two related but distinct responsibilities. Firstly, the position is responsible for ongoing reliability testing/validation of production part samples and collaborative work with printhead design on new product reliability assessments and improvements. While the work is generally routine, there may be instances where there is need for crisis level understanding of reliability risks and the need for rapid and effective assessment of customer impact. These situations require maturity, confidence, and experience in methods/techniques to make correct and critical business decisions.

A second requirement of the position is a strong background in structured root cause problem solving. Effectiveness in reliability test work is strengthened by experiences in studying and correcting parts and/or processes that are based on incomplete or unsatisfactory knowledge. While this work may be at an individual level, it often occurs collaboratively with other Failure Analysis engineers.

Qualified Individuals are expected to:

  • Be a full time supervisor of a dedicated reliability lab technician to ensure routine data collection, analysis and data reporting is accurate and properly done. (Note - your manager will maintain “management” duties of this technician, but they effectively work in support of your needs). Additionally, you will be expected to train them for special data collection or analysis needs as required.

  • Be independently capable of solid and systematic root cause failure analysis using structured methods that instill confidence in yourself, your methods, and your conclusions. Major issues will generally occur in teams, but you are expected to be a key contributor in such cases.

  • Have prior experience with reliability studies and data analysis.

  • Given reliability requirements, devise test plans to assess conformance to specified reliability and confidence levels. This includes sample sizing, test duration, analysis and interpretation of data sets, and awareness and communication of risks, shortcomings, and vulnerabilities.

  • Possess practical experience with accelerated life testing.

  • Have strong data analysis skills and comfort with statistical analyses, i.e., supported by multiple applied applications and confidence in the “meaning” of the analysis

  • Work closely with Reliability counterparts in the Printhead R&D department.

  • Work long hours if needed to support and address key business decisions related to reliability oversights (it is understood that these should not happen, the point is they can happen ).

  • Obtain, organize, and process field reliability data, including instances where such data may not be conveniently available.

  • Identify weakness/vulnerabilities in your own work and openly be able to discuss and address or reduce possible business consequence of them.

  • Concurrently manage and allocate limited test equipment for multiple reliability test studies in the most efficient manner.

  • Design or provide inputs to hardware/software designers for custom test fixturing as required.
