Purpose of Role:

A database administrator (DBA) is responsible for the performance, integrity and security of a database. Additional role requirements are likely to include planning, development and troubleshooting.

The database approach incorporates the following principles:

• Data remains consistent across the database;

• Data is clearly defined;

• Users access data concurrently, in a form that suits their needs;

• There is provision for data security and recovery control (all data is retrievable in an emergency)

DBA roles are increasingly identified by the databases and processes they administer and the capabilities of the database management system (DBMS) in use.

Scope of Role:

• Support over 300 staff

• Support over 30 different applications across three different platforms.

• Extended network of production workers connected remotely across the globe.

• Exert cost controls within the local IS Budget.

Major Responsibilities:

The work of a database administrator (DBA) varies according to the nature of the Application and the level of responsibility associated with the application. The work may be pure maintenance or it may also involve specialising in database development.

Typical responsibilities include some or all of the following:

• Establishing the needs of users and monitoring user access and security;

• Monitoring performance and managing parameters to provide fast query responses to front-end users;

• Mapping out the conceptual design for a planned database in outline;

• Considering both back-end organisation of data and front-end accessibility for end-users;

• Refining the logical design so that it can be translated into a specific data model;

• Further refining the physical design to meet system storage requirements;

• Installing and testing new versions of the database management system (DBMS);

• Maintaining data standards, including adherence to the Data Protection Act;

• Writing database documentation, including data standards, procedures and definitions for the data dictionary (metadata);

• Controlling access permissions and privileges;

• Developing, managing and testing back-up and recovery plans;

• Ensuring that storage, archiving, back-up and recovery procedures are functioning correctly;

• Capacity planning;

• Working closely with IT project managers, database programmers and web developers;

• Communicating regularly with technical, applications and operational staff to ensure database integrity and security;

• Commissioning and installing new applications and customising existing applications in order to make them fit for purpose.

• As the Production SQL DBA you will support the business critical applications based on Oracle and SQL Server.

• Knowledge of SQL Server 2000, 2005, 2008 and 2008R2 along with any SQL clustering experience is required.

• Oracle 9i, 10g and 11g along with RMAN

• DR implementations experience is ideal.

• Will have post graduate experience in a database administrator role, having been involved in at least one major system deployment.

• Degree level in a Computer related science. Additional management and financial qualifications are advantageous.

• A complete understanding of Windows and UNIX computing environment in all aspects.

• A thorough understanding of Client/Server technologies in both UNIX and Windows environments and the ability to architect system applications.

• Good knowledge of popular COTS packages and the maintenance methods used to support such products.

• A thorough knowledge of Networks.

• Excellent negotiation skills to liaise with suppliers.

• Communicating, knowledge sharing and working effectively within a well motivated functional team.

• Documentation skills to ensure Systems Operating Procedures are maintained.

• Ability to work flexibly, in ‘out of hours’ operation mode to ensure updates and patches can be applied to servers and network components without any interruption to production.

• A ‘customer first’ attitude to deal with customers at all times in a friendly and efficient manner.

• Ability to work is a process environment, delivering to schedules ever mindful of the customer.

• The nature of this position requires staff to occasionally work outside normal hours. Flexibility in the working day is essential in order to achieve the SLA.

• Language skills are an added bonus for a globally based business.

• Driving license essential.
