The Software Engineer role requires a highly motivated and experienced software developer with a strong background in Java and web technologies, and ideally a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. This role requires understanding and applying engineering concepts to the design, development, and ultimately maintenance of an enterprise software platform. All employees of Consilience Software are also expected to have customer interfacing skills and have excellent communication ability, whether interacting with fellow employees or external clients. This includes familiarity with the concepts of requirements gathering and specification writing. As a Software Engineer at Consilience Software, you will aid in the development and deployment of software that is integrated into several industry verticals, including helping to manage and eliminate diseases around the world as a Disease Surveillance solution. Our engineering challenges require innovative solutions to solve problems including the automated import of patient medical records into our Case Management System, migration of data from legacy systems into customer’s customized Case Management System, developing custom workflows and reports that aid customers in their day-to-day tasks, and interfacing with the latest CDC systems for the transmission of disease data.
The Software Engineer works as a member of either the development and support team or the professional services team and will work closely with the quality assurance team and the business analysts. Primary responsibilities include:
Our software engineers need to be able to competently, correctly, and efficiently design, implement, and deliver quality software that meets our customers’ business needs.
They are expected to have a strong understanding of our technology stack and should be able to apply understanding of this technical knowledge to real-world business needs.
They must also be able to learn new technology as needed in order to complete any necessary development tasks.
Developers should be able to confidently test their own written code and ensure its functionality meets required specifications.
All technical staff are responsible for being able to cooperatively work with other software engineers in a team based environment to complete development tasks. This includes utilizing such skills as effective communication, time planning and scheduling, problem solving, and product testing.
Software engineers are expected to also be able to interface and effectively communicate with customers and external (to our business unit) contacts
Up to 25% travel may be required (on average)
Technical staff are also responsible for assisting in drafting technical documentation, including design specifications, user manuals, and technical guides.
Continue to improve existing documentation standards, tools, and processes. All other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Ability to communicate effectively – verbally and in writing – while interacting with internal and external clients, peers, management, and other teams to build relationships and use facilitation skills with both technical and non-technical personnel
Technical fluency in the following areas: Java, the Java EE stack (specifically, enterprise web), Object Oriented Design and Development, Apache ant, JUnit, Struts, Hibernate, XML, relational databases and SQL
Must have experience in working with version control systems like SVN.
General knowledge of Agile development techniques and its influence on the release management process
Ability to effectively manage and execute multiple priorities and tasks on an as-needed basis
Keen attention to detail while maintaining the ability to see the big picture
Excellent technical and analytical skills
Ability to learn and apply new technologies quickly
Experience working with remote development teams is a plus. Has a strong sense of ownership in the deliverables they work on
Loves to learn and develop new skills continuously
Ability to estimate time, define scope, and prioritize development items in a project schedule.
Must have strong troubleshooting skills.
The ideal candidate must meet the following minimum requirements:
Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States; candidates requiring visa sponsorship are currently not being considered.
4 years of demonstrated hands-on experience developing, or supporting, large, three-tier systems/solutions using frameworks such as the Java EE platform, Struts, and/or Hibernate
2 year of experience working in a client-facing role, with relationship management responsibilities.
Expertise in the Java development language, preferably with experience in the Java EE stack
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Related Field Required from a university, 4-yr. college, or equivalent
